Madagascar cockroaches as pets

The cockroach of Madagascar as pets (Gromphadorhina portentosa), is one of the largest species of cockroaches, it can reach up to 7 cm adult. These cockroaches live on the island of Madagascar on the African coast where they nest in decayed wood.

Description

Madagascar cockroaches as pets
Unlike other cockroach species, they do not have wings. They are excellent climbers and they can evolve on smooth surfaces thanks to the adhesive balls that garnish their paws. The females carry the egg pouch in their bodies and release the young nymphs only once the eggs have hatched. As with other species of wood cockroaches, parents and their offspring stay together for a while. In captivity these insects can live five years. They feed mainly on plants.

Sexual dimorphism

Males have two more pronounced outgrowths than females at the pronotum level, which have the appearance of small horns. Females have 7 abdominal sternites and males 8. The latter are also thinner than the females and have more hairy antennae. They also have small styles alongside their cerques.

Whistling, hoisting

Madagascar cockroach.
Madagascar's cockroach is a popular "domestic animal" because of its whistling, grandeur and appearance. The hissing of this cockroach comes from the passage of forced air through their stigmas located on the abdomen1, many insects emitting a sound by rubbing different parts of their body, but this principle does not use the stigma. This sound takes two forms: the disturbance hissing and the battle whistle. Only males emit the battle whistle, they use it when they are challenged by other males. Males whistle more often than females.
